Chicken Soup for the Soul

“The answer to 'what makes a Canadian a Canadian?' is finally clear. It's in our stories. We now have something to pass on to our children and our children's children and they to theirs. We can stand up and be proud of our accomplishments as Canadians. Chicken Soup for the Canadian Soul gives us a legacy.” - Deane Parkes: writer, motivational trainer, speaker, mentor, businessman, and creator of National Post's HealthVenture

In 2017 Canada will be celebrating the 150th anniversary of Confederation. We’ll all be focused on what Canada, and being Canadian, means to us, so we’re creating a special Chicken Soup title about our country.  Send us your stories about what it means to be a Canadian, whether you're talking about hockey or camping, Celtic fiddle music, singing O Canada, or any of the hundreds of other things that make us so proud – and grateful - to be Canadian.

As always we need dramatic, heart warming or inspirational stories that touch the hearts of our readers and remind them of principles they can use in their own life. Here are few ideas of topics to get you thinking:

  • Have you had an experience that made you really proud to be a Canadian? Tell us!
  • Do you have a local hero that inspired you - or one of our greatest Canadian heroes that impacted your life? – Tell us the story!
  • Do you live in a community that has suffered a challenge – and experienced the kindness of neighbours or first responders who showed up to make a difference?
  • Are you, or is one of your family members in the Canadian military? Do you have a story you can share? And then there is Canada’s traditional role in the world as peacekeepers…
  • Are you an immigrant, or the child of immigrants who have come to this great land?
  • Share stories from our First Nations communities.
  • Tell us your story involving our Canadian music, languages and traditions.
  • Stories that illustrate our Canadian ingenuity, our diversity, tolerance, energy and spirit;
  • Your favourite holiday stories from our precious summer long weekends like Victoria Day (sometimes known as “May Long”), wearing red and white on Canada Day, the August and Labour Day long weekends, and of course fireworks celebrations.
  • Share your story about Thanksgiving and other holidays, and how we do them in Canada.
  • Tell us about heading to the cottage – at any time of the year!
  • Write about sports and activities like camping in our Provincial Parks or canoe tripping, hiking in the Rockies, water skiing and snow skiing, skating and, of course, Hockey.
  • Tell us stories that illustrate Canada’s geographic diversity from the West Coast to the Maritimes, the prairies, the Rockies, our hundreds of lakes and rivers, Canada’s far north, and everything in between. And how we obsess over the weather.
  • Did you travel the world with a Canadian Flag on your back pack? Share your story!
  • Feel free to include our unique Canadian expressions, and of course saying “eh!”

Please remember, we no longer publish “as told to” stories. Write your story or poem in the first person. Do not ghostwrite a story for someone else unless you list that person as the author. If a story was previously published, we will probably not use it unless it ran in a small circulation venue. Let us know where the story was previously published in the "Comments" section of the submission form

Remember that your story must be true — we do not publish fiction — and should be no longer than 1200 words. If you submitted a story for one of our previous books and we did not publish it, please feel free to submit it to this book if you think it fits. That way we will be sure it is considered for this new edition. If your story was already published in a past Chicken Soup for the Soul book, please do not submit it. We will not publish it again.

If your story is chosen, you will be a published author and your bio will be printed in the book if you choose. You will also receive a check for $200 U.S. and 10 free copies of your book, which will have a list price of $17.95 Canadian. You will retain the copyright for your story and the right to resell it.

Full of History, Heritage, Heroes and Heart, the 84 stories in Chicken Soup for the Canadian Soul bring us face to face with some of our most beloved and cherished Canadian stories. Along with many before unheard stories from ordinary Canadians and celebrated Canadians alike, they have been brought together for the first time in one place, and so preserved to pass along to our children and our grandchildren. In most cases written in the first person, they are presented in the dramatic and heartfelt style that makes them immediately accessible to people of all ages. The “heart” may be courtesy of Chicken Soup for the Soul, but the history, heroes and heritage part – are all ours – they are all Canadian.
